Dr. Stephanie Mapp

Course Title: Surviving a Recession-The Stuff They Didn’t Teach You in Dental School

Course Description: The great recession of 2008 was more than 12 years ago. Many dental practices today did not experience such a significant economic slowdown. Patients stopped completing preventive and expensive dental treatments because they suffered significant financial losses. Many dentists actually filed bankruptcy when bankruptcy was extremely rare historically. This course helps dentists to improve systems and become more efficient in their dental offices so they can continue to provide quality care to patients and still stay financially viable.

Course Objectives:

● How we define a recession
● Understand the employment issues when your practice is slowing down
● Creating systems to become more efficient and effective
● Evaluate dental reimbursement plans and contracts
● How to keep patient care standards up when collections are going down

Biography: Dr. Stephanie Mapp has over 25 years of real world dental experience as well as continuing education. Her very successful dental start up is still going strong after 17 years. For five and a half years she also owned a second office in a very affluent Florida coastal community.

Dr. Mapp attended the University of Florida College of Dentistry after only three years of undergraduate education in the Psychology Department. She spent eight years as an associate working in several cities in seven different types of dental offices which included all ranges of socioeconomic backgrounds from public health to boutique FFS offices. Her experience also presented her with exposure to many types of management systems. Having been both an associate dentist and hiring associate dentists, she has a unique perspective on how to be an employee as well as an owner.

Dr. Mapp lives in Fleming Island, Florida with her son Charlie, three dogs and her ER doctor boyfriend, Howard. Most of her time away from the office is spent traveling the globe and cheering for the Florida Gators. She has contributed to dozens of online podcasts and webinars as well as live seminars. She has contributed to the book, Mommy Dentists in Business: Juggling Family and Life While Running a Business by Dr. Grace Yum. Her newest venture is her consulting company Mapp Your Practice which helps new and existing owners set up systems for dealing with PPO insurance in their dental practices. Dr. Maggie Augustyn

Course Title: Embracing Being Perfectly Imperfect

Course Description: Dentists set unrealistic goals of producing text-book like dentistry in a difficult to navigate oral environment. Frustration is triggered when standard-of-care worthy and clinically-acceptable restorations are the norm. Further stress is amassed as our “bread and butter” dentistry begins to be compared to (in our own minds) lecture-circuit-worthy proof of workmanship. Comparing ourselves to the speakers on the big stage makes us feel inadequate. All of those of those combined can be debilitating. Its’ unending intensity can lead to not only to burnout but also to depression.

How do we overcome this? Can we do better? Can we produce more ideal dentistry, to increase the highs and eliminate the lows? Can we work harder at being perfect? The answer is simple: NO. So to say, that if we just became better dentists is unrealistic and erroneous and quite frankly impossible. It’s impossible to attain perfection, each and every time, maybe even ever. We must accept that we are perfectly imperfect.

But, how to stop using our short crown margins and endo under-fills as the definition for our self esteem?

We forgive ourselves for not being perfect. Not walk away from it, but simply forgive, and build on it.  And we give ourselves permission to be imperfect.

We also: celebrate strengths, marinade in good moments for at least 90 seconds, smile yourself in the mirror, stay present, stay mindful, reconsider your point of view and others’ point of view, write an apology letter, and if necessary seek medical help.

Course Objectives:

  • To find how we become addicted to unrealistic expectations and continue to judge ourselves/develop our self esteem based on our imperfect work,
  • To accept that we are perfectly imperfect,
  • To find out how to stop using our short crown margins or short endo fills as a definition for our self esteem,
  • To forgive ourselves for not being perfect.

Biography: Professionally: I am a general dentist. I Graduated as University Scholar from Benedictine University with BA in Molecular Biology (1999); following a gap year, went on to University of Illinois at Chicago to graduate in 2004 with a DDS. 18 months following graduation, I began my life as a co-owner of Happy Tooth practicing in Elmhurst, Illinois. I have completed Dawson Continuum early upon graduation and have active participant in Seattle Study Club for 10 years. I am a Moderator on Facebook groups: I Love Dentistry and Dental Nachos.
Personally: I’m very introverted. I am a transplant from Poland, moved here in 1990. I have struggled with depression and self image issues since 2nd grade. Life began to make sense when I met my husband and ultimately totally took off when I had my daughter. Sprinkles on top with the dog. I am an avid writer. I feel like if I’m not writing I am wasting time. I love painting, home projects and working out (not really; truthfully: not at all). My best feature is my sense of humor…. and I love my job almost every day! When I am healthy, I can’t wait to live life.
