About The Speaker

Dr. Julie Woods

Dr. Woods

Dr. Julie Woods has worked as a periodontist since finishing her residency at Baylor College of Dentistry in 2004.  She has owned her practice for over fifteen years. In 2017, when she was at the height of production, burned out, and making less money than ever before.  Dr. Woods was tempted to walk away from dentistry all together.

Thankfully, someone suggested she read Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. Within the book, Mike outlines a system which guarantees profitability starting the first day of implementation. She began working the system early in 2018 and has since paid off all remaining business and school loan debt (early), decreased overhead, increased profitability, and maintained her take-home pay without having to work more.

In 2020, Dr. Woods completed her certification as a Profit First Professional. As a working periodontist, author, and the “Profit First Dentist”, she educates others on how to be consistently profitable by helping colleagues implement the Profit First cash management system within their practices. Owners better understand their business finances, improve cash flow and ensure profitability. Dentists that take profit first, work smarter, rather than harder, which means they spend less time working in their businesses.

Course Title: On Fire: Spark Profit and Avoid Burnout
Course Description:
Review of dental practice “numbers,” the basics of financial terminology, and all the things you wish you knew to ask your accountant to understand the financial “health” of your business.  Dr. Woods will dispel the myth that producing more dentistry ensures more profits.  By the end of the course, you will have the information necessary to implement Profit First in your practice to increase profitability without killing yourself by doing more dentistry.
Course Objectives:
  • Calculate your profit margin.  Why is 10% pretax profit the new break-even point and if you have less profit your business is on “life support”?
  • Calculate the BAM (bare ass minimum) needed to stay open and use that amount to determine how much you should have in your “vault” account.
  • Learn the average percentages in the dental industry for key expenses. and suggestions on how you might get those in range if they are not already.
  • Learn the difference between salary and profit, what EBITDA and tax basis mean and how all of these terms relate to you and your dental practice.
  • Conduct a “Limited Financial Exam” using step-by-step instructions and your practice financials. This tool will allow you to quickly access your practice’s financial health and give you a starting point to increase profitability by implementing Profit First.

Course Title: Maximizing Profitability in the PPO World
Course Description:

Dental insurance is an integral part of most dental offices.  Understanding how insurance works is a key to happier patients and more treatment acceptance. In today’s insurance-driven environment, a dentist needs to be smart with how they proceed with insurance contracts.  A mistake in contract selection can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. This presentation helps dentists navigate the insurance minefields and demonstrates how you can increase profits by doing the same exact number of procedures or even fewer procedures than you currently do.

Course Objectives:
  • Creating a system to simplify the insurance plan comparisons.
  • Understanding the economic impact PPO has on the practice.
  • Learn the psychology of dental insurance within the dental office.
  • Developing a long-term strategy to decrease dependence on PPO contracts.
  • Knowing when you are ready to drop a PPO contract and how to retain the patients.

About The Speaker

Dr. Nada Albatish

Dr. Nada Albatish owns and operates a multidisciplinary practice, All Smiles Dental Centre, just north of Toronto. As a passionate learner, she first completed a GPR, followed by hundreds of hours of CE each year. She is a fact finder – always researching, looking for evidence, and understanding the whys of what we do in practice as dentists.

Nada started her current practice from scratch as a solo practitioner and quickly realized she needed a strong support team as well as a team of skilled doctors in multiple specialties to help her achieve her goals as a comprehensive dentist. Today, Nada’s niche is complex and rehabilitative dentistry, supported by a team of 30, including general practitioners and specialists.

Nada is honored to serve as Faculty for Clinical Mastery Series, curator for Restorative Nation, co-author a book, write articles, and speak at various dental events. Nada is inspired by helping dentists to achieve excellence, predictability, and confidence in their craft. She is committed to the success of her patients, colleagues, and the advancement of the dental profession at large.

As a mother to two beautiful girls, Nada is blessed every day to be able to see the world through the eyes of her little people. In her free time, which she has learned to intentionally create on a weekly basis, she loves to exercise, eat good food, and spend time with her girls doing absolutely nothing except living in the moments. During the 20% of the year that Toronto has good weather, she finds peace in water sports, especially paddle boarding on the lake under the sun. The rest of the year she creates the same feeling by traveling!
