Dr. Burkhart received a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from Fairleigh Dickinson University College of Dentistry, a Master of Education degree from North Carolina State University in Occupational Health Education, and a Doctorate degree in Adult Education/Interdisciplinary Studies from North Carolina State University. After taking the graduate pathology courses at the University of North Carolina, her dissertation topic was “Oral Lichen Planus Commonalities: Educational and Psychological Implications.” She completed a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in The Division of Oral Pathology at University of North Carolina College of Dentistry. Dr. Burkhart was the coordinator and co-investigator of “The Lichen Planus Study” from 1995–1997. She was involved in teaching both dental students and dental hygiene students.
Dr. Burkhart is an Adjunct Professor in The Department of Periodontics/Stomatology Clinic at the College of Dentistry, Texas A&M, where she has been a faculty member since January 1997. Prior to her appointment at the College of Dentistry in Dallas, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina College of Dentistry for nine years, teaching in both the dental hygiene and oral diagnosis department/oral pathology division. Dr. Burkhart has held appointments at The College of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey, at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the Behavioral Sciences Department.
In addition to the formation of The International Support Group for Oral Lichen Planus, Dr. Burkhart has presented seminars and webinars nationally and internationally on Oral Lichen Planus, mucosal disorders, and aging/oral medicine, and has published articles on these topics in national dental journals. She has co-authored three editions of General and Oral Pathology for the Dental Hygienist. The focus of her work is on oral lichen planus, lifestyle interventions, and oral medicine. She is co-chair of the Academic Affiliate Fellows of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. She provides dental continuing education courses for both ACES and Concord Dental Seminars on pathology and human trafficking courses.
