Mia L. Geisinger, DDS, MS is a Professor, Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology, and Chair of the Department of Periodontology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Geisinger received her BS in Biology from Duke University, her DDS from Columbia University School of Dental Medicine, and her MS and Certificate in Periodontology and Implantology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Geisinger is a Diplomate in the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow in the International Team for Implantology, the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. She has served as the President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, as Chair of the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs, as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Dental Association Science and Research Institute, and on multiple national and regional organized dentistry committees. She currently serves as the American Academy of Periodontology’s Immediate Past President. She has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial board of several publications. Her research interests include periodontal and systemic disease interaction, implant dentistry in the periodontally compromised dentition, and novel treatment strategies for oral soft and hard tissue regeneration. She lectures nationally and internationally on topics in periodontology and oral healthcare. And she does it all in her trademark heels. Let’s put the FUN back in FUNdamental periodontology!
Dr. Hobbs is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and has over 20 years of Dental and Periodontal experience. Undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in College Park and Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Magna Cum Laude Graduate. (Combined 6 year accelerated program College and Dental School)
Dr. Hobbs completed her General Practice Residency at York Hospital in York PA , Dr. Hobbs was then Chief Resident Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Hobbs worked as general dentist in Charlotte NC for Two Years before deciding to specialize in Periodontics and moving to California .
Dr. Hobbs attended the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) where she earned her Certificate in Periodontology while simultaneously earning a Master’s Degree in Oral Biology. Dr Hobbs in received the “Most Innovative” Clinical Research Award from the Western Society of Periodontology based on her Thesis of The link between growth factors and healing in Periodontal Therapy in Diabetics. Dr. Hobbs Master’s Thesis on “PDL Cells from Insulin Dependent Diabetics ..” was published in the Journal of Periodontology Vol 70 Issue 7.
Dr. Hobbs and her husband moved to Durham, NC where she began her private practice in Periodontology and Implantology. She operated a highly successful private periodontal practice in Durham and received her Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in 2000.
She has been an Assistant Professor at UNC School of Dentistry Periodontology Department.
Dr. Hobbs served as President of the North Carolina Society of Periodontist in 2014. She is a recognized leader in her field in Laser Periodontal Therapy and is a Speaker for Straumann Dental Implants and Fotona Twin Light Lasers.
In 2015, Dr. Hobbs started the Hobbs Spear Study Club. She very much enjoys the opportunity to interact with great restorative doctors and specialists and has been a member of numerous Study Clubs in the Raleigh /Durham Area. Dr. Hobbs also volunteers her dental services regularly for the Baptist Mission Dental Bus and Miriam Dental Clinic and Wake Smiles. Dr. Hobbs has been voted Top Periodontist by her Piers every year since 2010 in Durham, Orange, Cary and Wake County.
Dr Hobbs serves on several committees for the American Academy of Periodontology including the Insurance Committee and Continuing Education Committee. She is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, American Board of Periodontology, The Western Society of Periodontist, The American Academy of Women Dentist, Mommy in Dentist Business Facebook Group, Founding Member and administrator of the Perio-Implant Arab Society.
